| Free From Addiction |
Breaking bad addiction can be hard! Sometimes its easier to go to
the dentist and get a tooth pulled, than to change a bad addiction! What
does it take for us to really go from A to Z and take a bad addiction that
sabotages our lives and transform it into a good habit?
1.
Take Inventory - Write down on a piece of paper what has this habit
helped you accomplish? What have been the consequences of this bad addiction
in your life? Has it made you a better person? Has it brought joy to
people around you?
2. 30 Day Plan of Action - Write down an action
plan on your calendar on what action can you take. example: I want to
stop smoking. If its an oral fixation, place something healthy in your
mouth like chewing carrots instead. If it's an addiction, get a patch
and wean yourself slowly. The focus is that you have an action plan
daily for 30 days to geared you towards change.
3. Support - Tell
at least 3 of your closest friends your plan of action. Have them call
you during the day. You call them when you get tempted. The key here is
you have help.
4. Daily Journal - Write daily your progress. This
is a way to process your thoughts and feelings. It's important to look
at why those habits are there. At times we think that it's just changing
an action in our lives instead of our thinking. Write down victories
and see how that will help boost your moral.
5. Reward Yourself -
When you see transformation make it a big deal. Celebrate your progress
and victories with your friends. This will not only inspire you but
others as well. Change breeds Change in others!
The most important
things is that you are forging to be who you want to be and not just
being! It takes courage, determination, and focus to see yourself on the
other side. Take one step at a time, one day at a time and you will see
yourself break free and live your life to the Ultimate!

First of all, we need to understand that an addiction starts forming
when we start associating ourselves with it. A person really gets
addicted to alcohol, when he starts seeing alcohol as part of his life.
What a person really needs to do is to 'disassociate' himself with the
thing he is addicted to. We are not just physical beings with all
instincts that try to captivate us. We are spiritual beings that can and
should take control of our lives and live free from any emotional,
physical or any other kind of addiction. When we start seeing ourselves
as such beings we are on our way to freedom from bad habits. Another
thing that any person willing to quit his bad habit must do is to
develop good habits instead of the old ones. You cannot just quit and
live in a 'void'. There are no empty spaces in universe. If one habit is
get rid of, it has to be replaced by another one. And if you do not
change it with a good habit, you will surely develop another bad habit.
That's why former drug addicts when they get rid of their addiction
suddenly turn to something else: sex pleasures, overworking, overeating
and etc. They do not replace their old habits with new ones and in this
way some other bad habits take hold of them. So, almost all
rehabilitation centers have new habits formation practice in their
program.

One more necessary thing on the way to freedom is to
develop new relationships. We usually cherish our addictions with the
people who have the same passions and it is of utmost importance to form
new relationships with people who do not have addiction that we have
been suffering from. In this way we would not be tempted by our
environment to do things that lead to addictions. This kind of
experience might be very painful as we will probably have to say goodbye
to our old friends and it will take time to form new friendships with
people we never knew before. However, it is a must if we want to get rid
of old habits and live in harmony with ourselves and the society. Even
if the process takes a lot of time, it is worthwhile doing as we will
see good 'fruits' of this choice later. When one has any form of addiction, the majority of the person's mind
is completely taken over by what the person is addicted to. This makes
it difficult when addiction issues are tried to be solved ONLY by
withdrawal from the substance or activity. This is because there is an
emptiness that is left in the person's mind and that is what craves for a
fill, so the person ends up slipping back to the addiction. Therefore,
in the place of withdrawal should be introduction to another form of
addiction. As mentioned earlier, addiction can be good or bad, so
getting addicted to the right activity solves the problem and does not
leave that emptiness in the person's mind, so there won't be an issue of
slipping back.For
every negative addiction, there's a positive addiction to solve it.
Simply find the one good thing you do and time seems to fly and get
addicted to it. Each time the negative one pops up, DO that one good
thing and in a period of 21 days, you will be comfortably addicted to it
and at this point, it has replaced the wrong one.
All The Best
